New research by Wajahat Z Mehal M.D., D.Phil associate Professor at Yale School of Medicine suggests that a daily 75mg dose of aspirin could help combat liver damage.

Asprin acts as an anti-inflammatory and “offers the exciting possibility of reducing a lot of pain and suffering in patients with liver diseases, using a new and very practical approach” said Dr Mehal. “Many agents such as drugsand alcohol cause liver damage and we have found two new ways to block a central pathway responsible for such liver Injury. Our strategy is to use aspirin on a daily basis to prevent liver injury.”

This could potentially lead to the resurrection of promising drugs which have failed clinical trials because they caused liver damage Dr Mehal told the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Nick Henderson of the charity The Aspirin Foundation said “Serious damage to the liver can be irreversible after a certain stage so this sounds like an encouraging piece of work.”

There are risks in taking aspirin on a daily basis and you must seek medical advice before doing so.
